Hair Loss – An Overview

Most common hair loss comes under what has been commonly known as Male Pattern Baldness (MPB). Although referred to as MPB, females suffer a similar syndrome, so it is more properly called androgenetic alopecia.

Hair loss has been noticed and studied throughout the ages, and some interesting discoveries were made in ancient times.

The most common cause of hair loss is genetics – inherit the tendency to lose hair from either or both of parents. The medical term for the genetic predisposition for hair loss is « androgenetic alopecia ».

Many people change the appearance of their hair by using chemical treatments like dyes, tints, bleaches, straighteners, relaxers and permanent waves. If correctly done and done using reputable products, its rare to have any damage.

Some may think mental anguish of hair loss is not as important as other mental or physical problems. But a recent study shows a positive correlation between hair loss, self esteem and achievement.

In contrast generaly Women’s hair loss does not result in total hair loss as like that of men. Even though women’s hair loss is partial, it is devastating for the individual when it does happen.

Generally, at any one of point of time, around ten percent of hair on the scalp stays in a resting position, which falls after two or three months. New hair then starts growing in its place.

Although much research has been done, nothing exact has been found to completely arrest hair loss or stop the balding process.

When studying the negative effects of hair loss a major theme was noticed, the lack of hair affects a person’s attitude to one’s self fearing what others may see on top of their head.

One of the first steps to treat hair loss is to partake of nourishing, healthy food. Since hair is made up of the protein keratin, men and women require different quantities of protein to keep their hair healthy.

Hair loss is not something to be feared- as long as we understand what causes hair loss we can take steps in order to not only stop hair loss but also to induce the growth of new hair.
