Hair loss is one of the most common afflictions that people have. Over thirty million women and sixty million men in the United States have what is called androgenic alopecia. This is more commonly referred to as as male pattern baldness (MPB) and/or female pattern baldness (FPB).
There are several options you can take to correct this problem if you are part of this group. There are two products approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), Minoxidil and Propecia, that are proven to correct MPB and FPB. Another method you may want to investigate, is the herbal supplement Saw Palmetto.
What Is Saw Palmetto – It is actually a small palm tree found in South Eastern United States and Southern California. The berries from this palm tree are used to actually produce the herb Saw Palmetto.
History – The native Indians started using this herb hundreds of year ago to help with urinary problems. They also used this herb as a food source. In the late 20th century, Saw Palmetto was being used in Europe to help men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or what is commonly referred to as an enlarged prostate.
While using this to help with their BPH, men noticed that they started to re-grow hair on the scalp. This should not be surprising, since an enlarged prostate and androgenic alopecia are both believed to be caused by the hormone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone).
How It Works – It is believed that this herbal supplement works by reducing the DHT levels in the body. It does this by blocking the 5 alpha reductase enzyme, which is needed by testosterone to create DHT. No major studies have been done on this herb and its ability to stop hair loss and re-grow hair. But a small sample study has been performed. A majority of the subjects in this study reported stopping hair loss and re-growing some hair.
Conclusion – The FDA has not approved this as a means to stop hair loss and re-grow hair. It is provided to the public only as a nutritional supplement. So if you are suffering from MPB or FPB, you may want to investigate using this herbal supplement.
I use Minoxidil for my hair loss and have seen some success. I also take Saw Palmetto for my enlarged prostate. For my hair loss I see visible results. For my enlarged prostate, the only results I see, is that my prostate-specific antigen (PSA) has gone down
